Description

As the flagship of The Ones range, the Genelec 8361A studio monitor delivers the most advanced sound performance of any studio monitor while keeping its size optimised. Leading audio professionals choose the 8361A for arranging, orchestration, production and mixing.

Genelec 8361A studio monitor design overview

The Genelec 8361A impresses with its modern look, softly rounded lines and every detail refined by Genelec's talented engineers in Finland. It measures 237 x 365 x 223 mm (W x H x D) and weighs 31.9 kg, so it is easy to transport and set up in many different spaces.

The enclosure is made of thin-walled die-cast aluminium that is light and stiff, meeting the world's highest acoustic standards; it not only looks great but also protects the drivers inside. The rear panel has a variety of connectors for setting up with a wide range of professional audio equipment.

Genelec 8361A studio monitor sound quality review

Accurate full-range three-way design

The Genelec 8361A has four drivers that reproduce sound clearly in three ways: two 26.3 cm oval woofers, a 13 cm coaxial midrange driver and a 2.5 cm metal dome tweeter.

The monitor handles every genre of music well, reproducing sound with high accuracy and fidelity. Built-in Class D amplification of up to 1000 W RMS gives it impressive performance.

Outstanding sound performance

As Genelec's largest coaxial point-source monitor, the 8361A offers extremely high dynamic range, unrivalled directivity control and imaging, and a short-term SPL of 118 dB. Its output stays refined in any space and at any listening distance up to 5 metres, making it suitable for small and medium-sized rooms.

Adapts to any space with Smart Active Monitoring (SAM™) and GLM™ calibration

Genelec SAM systems are indispensable for audio professionals because they automatically adapt to the acoustic environment and correct level, delay and room anomalies. SAM systems are controlled over a network by Genelec's own powerful and highly intuitive Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM™) software.

GLM features the advanced AutoCal™ 2 automatic calibration algorithm for this intelligently networked product range.

Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC™) driver technology

Genelec's Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC™) driver technology overcomes the shortcomings of conventional driver design and avoids any source of diffraction. The core of the MDC design is an MF driver suspension with an integrated tweeter, formed by a flexible curved surround with the dome tweeter assembly at its centre.

The inner part joins the cone to the tweeter without any acoustic discontinuity and is very carefully optimised to form an integrated directivity-controlling waveguide for the tweeter, giving an extremely smooth frequency response.

Active crossover

The active crossover gives the manufacturer more flexibility and precision in adjusting and fine-tuning each output frequency response of the Genelec 8361A for the specific drivers used.

As a result, the monitor compensates for frequency and phase response anomalies related to the drivers' characteristics within the intended passband. The end result is a simpler, more reliable, more efficient, more consistent and more accurate active speaker system.

Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS™)

Lower standby power consumption, a smaller environmental footprint and lower running costs are the benefits of Genelec's ISS Intelligent Signal Sensing technology. By monitoring the input signal and detecting whether the speaker is in use, the ISS™ circuit puts the speaker into a low-power sleep state in which it draws less than 0.5 watts.

Exclusive Iso-Pod™ stand

The Iso-Pod™ stand not only looks great but also acts as a sturdy, stable support. It is firmly attached to the enclosure and can slide along its curved side or bottom, allowing the speaker to tilt ±15° so it can be aimed precisely at the listener by adjusting the cabinet's tilt.

Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE™)

To improve the flatness of the frequency response and power response of a free-standing speaker system, Genelec designed an enclosure with rounded edges and gently curved front and side panels. The minimum diffraction enclosure not only achieves an exceptionally flat frequency response but also delivers excellent sound quality. At the same time, the light, stiff die-cast aluminium cabinet maximises internal volume to improve low-frequency performance.
