DJ headphones do one job in the booth: let you hear the next track clearly over a loud room so you can cue and beatmatch it. Studio headphones are for long, detailed listening while you produce. This category has both, from Pioneer DJ, AIAIAI, Sennheiser, Behringer and Yamaha.
How to choose:
- Closed back: blocks out the room so you can hear your cue.
- Swivelling ear cups: for monitoring with one ear; the Sennheiser HD 25 adds a split headband that keeps it steady on your head.
- Build and spare parts: booth headphones get dropped and pulled. The AIAIAI TMA-2 is modular — headband, speaker units, ear pads and cable are replaced one by one.
- Cable or Bluetooth: Bluetooth models such as the Pioneer DJ HDJ-CUE1BT are handy for everyday listening; plug in the cable when you mix, so there is no delay.
- Plug: our practice rooms take a 6.3 mm or a 3.5 mm plug, so a 3.5 mm cable with a 6.3 mm adapter covers both.
Producing more than DJing? Choose studio headphones such as the Yamaha HPH-MT5 and pair them with studio monitors. Headphones are the one thing to bring when you book a practice room.
