Description
The Ones is Genelec's series of compact, powerful studio monitors, and the Genelec 8331A studio monitor is a prime example. It is an astonishing three-way design that stays compact and accurate, combining Genelec's Acoustically Concealed Woofer (ACW) technology with other innovations. The 8331A is the perfect solution for professional recording studios, music production, post-production, broadcast and more.
Genelec 8331A design overview
The Genelec 8331A has a compact design in a premium die-cast aluminium enclosure, available in four colours to suit every taste: dark grey, black, white and a distinctive unpainted raw finish.
It measures 305 x 189 x 212 mm (W x H x D) and weighs just 6.7 kg, so it is easy to set up and transport. On the back there are DIP switches and a rotary level control for standalone use. A built-in Iso-Pod stand isolates the monitor from surfaces that would colour the sound.
Genelec 8331A sound quality
Three-way design
The Genelec 8331A uses four drivers in a three-way system: each band is distinct, yet they support one another perfectly. The line-up consists of two 13 cm woofers and a 9 cm coaxial midrange driver combined with a 1.9 cm metal dome tweeter, for impressive, faithful full-range sound. The aligned acoustic axes of the midrange driver ensure a precise point source of sound radiation.
An astonishing 154 W RMS of power in such a compact size gives impressive performance. High-efficiency Class D amplification runs reliably for long periods at high levels.
Proprietary GLM calibration software
As the smallest model in The Ones range, the 8331A is perfect for small rooms or very close-field applications, offering a solution never available before. Using Genelec's patented GLM calibration software, the 8331A compensates for adverse room acoustics and distance delays, making sure your mixes and tracks always reach their best quality. GLM also handles and coordinates monitor pairing, ISS override and more.
The highly intuitive Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) software lets you control the whole SAM loudspeaker network, giving you a flexible, convenient computer-controlled system of studio monitors and subwoofers.
Smart Active Monitor (SAM)
Genelec's Smart Active Monitor (SAM) technology has impressed the world's leading recording engineers: it optimises level, timing and equalisation of room response anomalies to create accurate, tight sound with wide dynamic range and an unprecedented frequency response. You can set the monitors up horizontally or vertically and the sound quality stays the same.
Designed for applications that demand exceptional imaging, the Genelec 8331A offers extended frequency response and optimised listening distance and duration, reducing listener fatigue during long sessions.
Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) technology
The 8331A uses Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) technology to automatically detect whether audio is being fed to the monitor and switch to standby by itself, saving energy and running costs.
Point-source monitoring for small spaces
The Genelec 8331A delivers extended frequency response at near-field to mid-field distances, combining Genelec's Acoustically Concealed Woofer (ACW) technology with other innovations for impressively linear output across a wide bandwidth, with exceptional imaging and clarity.
Acoustically Concealed Woofer (ACW) technology for superior imaging
The dual woofers of the 8331A SAM use Genelec's innovative Acoustically Concealed Woofer (ACW) technology to extend coaxial radiation down to bass frequencies. Hidden inside the cabinet, the two woofers use the entire front baffle as a giant Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) to control directivity over a very wide bandwidth, creating a large “sweet spot”.
The Genelec 8331A also provides effective separation from the Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC) driver, which improves reproduction of the mid and high frequencies. Together, they make an extremely accurate studio monitor with unrivalled frequency separation, a wide dispersion pattern and superb imaging.
Easy to integrate
The 8331A accepts both analogue and digital AES/EBU signals via separate XLR jacks and works with a wide range of equipment to build a complete audio system. Routing is handled by a few Cat5 cables and the GLM adapter, with two RJ45 ports provided for the GLM connection. An XLR output jack is also available to send identical copies of the AES/EBU signal to other monitors.
