Description
The Genelec 8350A studio monitor combines an elegant design with modern proprietary technology and, above all, Smart Active Monitor (SAM) integration for extremely powerful sound performance. It is an ideal choice for producers, musicians and engineers working on mixing, audio editing and processing, radio, TV and video production… or simply a home karaoke system.
Genelec 8350A studio monitor: design overview
The Genelec 8350A has a stylish, elegant design, finished in a sturdy die-cast aluminium enclosure crafted by Genelec's audio engineering team in Finland.
It measures 286 x 452 x 278 mm (W x H x D) and weighs 12.8 kg, so it fits on a desk, TV stand or bookshelf… without blocking your view. It comes in two elegant finishes, dark grey and white, to suit your taste.
Genelec 8350A studio monitor: sound quality review
Impressive sound performance
The Genelec 8350A has a 20.5 cm woofer for powerful bass, combined with a 1.9 cm metal dome tweeter for airy, open highs. Its built-in high-efficiency Class D amplification with 350W RMS power far exceeds what you would expect from such a compact speaker, so the output always reproduces every melody vividly and clearly.
Helps you make accurate decisions
With high SPL and an extended frequency response, the Genelec 8350A delivers the absolute transparency and neutrality you expect from a Genelec studio monitor and fits perfectly into any studio or broadcast environment. Its wide, uncoloured sweet spot helps you make accurate, reliable mix decisions, and its long-term durability keeps production costs down.
Powerful yet smart
As a Smart Active Monitor, the 8350A integrates tightly with Genelec's GLM software, which lets you configure and calibrate it to your listening environment, compensating for the room's adverse acoustic effects to create a truly optimised monitoring solution, from mono to multichannel. Genelec studio monitors are ready to deliver and are a reliable companion even when you work in challenging acoustic spaces.
Active crossover
An electronic crossover splits the audio signal into separate frequency bands, each of which is then sent to a transducer optimised for that particular band.
Active crossovers come in both digital and analog types. Genelec's active digital crossovers include additional signal processing, such as driver protection, delay and equalisation, ensuring the sound is amplified for each speaker system at the best possible quality.
Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW™) for a flat response
DCW wavefront-shaping technology, developed and continually refined by Genelec, makes directivity even and smooth and limits the radiation angle to reduce stray radiation. The aim is excellent flatness of the overall frequency response as well as an even power response.
Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS™)
A feature that saves energy when using studio monitors, introduced in early 2013, is Genelec's Intelligent Signal Sensing technology, ISS.
ISS™ meets both the European Union ErP Directive and environmental sustainability standards: the ISS™ circuit monitors the speaker's input signal and detects whether the speaker is in use.
If the ISS circuit detects no audio at the input for a period of time, it puts the speaker into a low-power sleep mode in which it draws less than 0.5 watts. When an input signal is detected, the speaker switches back on, ready for use.
Iso-Pod™ vibration-isolating stand for a clearer sound image
The Genelec 8350A can be set up in many different positions and on different surfaces while the sound reaching the listener stays the same. That is thanks to an effective solution developed by Genelec: the Iso-Pod™ speaker stand – an isolation positioner/decoupler attached to the aluminium enclosure.
It has four shallow feet made from a special rubber-like material and is attached firmly to the enclosure so that it can slide along the curved surface or curved base, letting the speaker tilt ±15°. The speaker's acoustic axis can then be aimed precisely at the listener by adjusting the tilt of the cabinet with the Iso-Pod.
