Description
The Studiomaster Vortex 18SA is the larger of the two Vortex active subwoofers. It puts an 18″ driver and the same 2,400 W peak amplifier as the 15SA into a 15 mm plywood cabinet and reaches 134 dB maximum SPL, 2 dB more than the 15″ model. It fits Vortex systems that need more low-frequency output than the 15SA gives.
Highlights
- 18″ low-frequency driver in a 15 mm plywood enclosure with a full-face steel grille.
- Amplifier rated 600 W RMS, 1,200 W program, 2,400 W peak.
- 134 dB maximum SPL.
- DSP with low-pass presets at 80/100/120/150 Hz, delay from 0 to 10 m, normal or inverted polarity and volume.
- Two balanced XLR inputs and two balanced XLR outputs; 0 dBu input sensitivity.
- Large handles, a 35 mm pole socket and a 100–240 V power supply.
In your setup
A typical chain runs from the DJ mixer into the two XLR inputs of the 18SA and out of its two XLR outputs to Vortex 12A or 15A tops. Start with the 120 Hz preset, which matches the crossover Studiomaster lists, and try 100 or 80 Hz if the tops should carry more of the low end. When the sub and the tops stand in different places, use the delay to line them up, and flip the polarity if the bass gets thinner where the two overlap. A pole in the 35 mm socket puts a top above the sub.
