Description
The Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen is a compact, bus-powered USB-C audio interface with one microphone preamp, one line/instrument input and a pair of balanced monitor outputs. It is aimed at singers, guitarists, podcasters and producers who record one source at a time and want a clean signal path into their computer.
Highlights
- Mic preamp with 57 dB of gain, −127 dBu EIN and 48V phantom power on the rear XLR
- Air mode with two settings: Presence, and Presence with Harmonic Drive
- Front 6.35 mm line/instrument input with 1 MΩ impedance in Inst mode
- Two balanced 6.35 mm TRS outputs with 120 dB dynamic range, plus a headphone output with its own level knob
- 24-bit up to 192 kHz, Direct Monitor and Loopback
- USB-C (USB 2.0) powered by the computer; 46.5 x 143 x 96 mm, 382 g
In a home or project studio the Solo sits between the computer and a pair of studio monitors: the mic goes into the back, a guitar or keyboard into the front jack, and Direct Monitor lets you hear the input without the delay of the computer. Focusrite Control 2 for Windows and macOS handles the settings, and Loopback brings audio playing on the computer into a DAW as an input, handy for sampling, podcasts and streams.
For DJs it is a recording and monitoring companion rather than a mixing tool. The line input is mono, so capturing a stereo DJ mix calls for an interface with two line inputs, but the Solo handles voice-overs, jingles, intros and production work well. Focusrite's software bundle currently includes Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools Intro+, Cubase LE and the Hitmaker Expansion.
