Description

The AKG P120 is a true condenser microphone with a 2/3-inch diaphragm and a cardioid pattern, made for vocals, speech and instruments in project studios and home recording, and usable on stage as well. It is a straightforward first studio microphone for singers, podcasters and producers who record at home.

Highlights

  • 2/3-inch low-mass diaphragm, cardioid pickup
  • 20 – 20,000 Hz bandwidth, 24 mV/Pa sensitivity
  • 19 dB-A equivalent noise, 75 dB-A signal-to-noise ratio
  • Switchable -20 dB pad for loud sources up to 150 dB SPL
  • Switchable 300 Hz bass-cut filter (-6 dB/octave) against rumble and footfall noise
  • All-metal body, balanced 3-pin XLR output

The P120 needs phantom power (44 to 52 V, up to 3 mA) from an audio interface, mixer or preamp. A DJ or producer who wants to record voice tags, intros or vocals for their own tracks can plug it into the same interface that feeds their monitors, using an ordinary XLR cable.

The pad helps when the mic sits close to a guitar amplifier, a drum kit or a loud singer, and the bass cut reduces low-frequency rumble carried through the floor or the stand. The supplied stand adapter fits a desk or floor stand; for close vocals, a pop filter in front of the capsule is worth adding.
