Private DJ lessons mean one teacher, one student: the whole lesson is built around you, your music and your pace. The questions we hear most are whether one-on-one is worth paying more for than a group class, and how big the difference actually is. Here's a straight comparison of the three ways to learn at Muse Inc in Saigon (private, group and online), every course price, and who private lessons suit best. Lessons are available in English, and you don't need any gear of your own.

What private DJ lessons are like

In a private lesson, the teacher's full attention is on you. You follow the same course plan as everyone else, with the same stages and tests, but the pace adapts: you move quickly through what you've got and spend longer on what you haven't.

Three things set private lessons apart at Muse Inc:

• Flexible hours: any time between 9:00 and 21:00, every day of the week, instead of a fixed class timetable.
• Your music: bring the tracks you love and learn the techniques on them.
• Club gear: lessons run on the school's Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta equipment, including CDJ-3000, DJM-A9, CDJ-2000NXS2, DJM-900NXS2 and XDJ-RR, plus turntables and controllers, with rekordbox, Serato DJ Pro and Traktor.

Private vs group vs online

All three follow the same programme. What changes is how you learn and what you pay.

Private (1-on-1): your own pace and schedule between 9:00 and 21:00; the teacher watches every move and corrects mistakes as they happen; you're on the decks for almost the whole lesson. It costs the same as a group class or more, depending on the course.

Group: a fixed timetable, up to 4 students on most courses and 4–6 on the Comprehensive DJ Course. You mix back to back with classmates, learn from their mistakes as well as yours, and pay less on the longer courses.

Online: a laptop and controller at home, live lessons with a teacher. It's the cheapest option and works if you're outside Ho Chi Minh City, but you miss time on club CDJs, a proper mixer and a big sound system.

In short: groups give you company, online gives you convenience, and private lessons give you speed and precision.

USD figures are approximate, at about 26,000 VND to the dollar.

Worth noticing: on Level 1, private lessons cost only 1,500,000 VND more than the group class, so if your schedule is unpredictable, private is an easy pick. On Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced (Level 3), private is 2,000,000 VND more; on the Comprehensive course, 8,000,000 VND more for all 33 lessons. The genre courses (Techno, EDM, Urban) are private or online only.

Who private lessons suit

Complete beginners who want a solid start. You build the foundations properly, from gear, BPM, cueing, gain and EQ to beatmatching and transitions, without keeping up with a class. Start with Level 1 — Basic DJ, and read our 8-step path for beginner DJs to see what's ahead.

Busy expats and anyone with shifting hours. Book lessons around work at any time from 9:00 to 21:00. Only free in the evenings? DJ After Hours is a compact 5-session course.

Visitors on a limited stay. Tell us your dates when you enquire, so we can suggest a course that fits your time in Saigon.

Self-taught DJs. Skip what you already know and work on the gaps: phrasing, EQ, mixing across genres, track selection and controlling the energy of a set.

Future professionals. The final stage of the Comprehensive DJ Course covers performance and career: switching DJs and troubleshooting, crowd reading, stage presence, self-promotion and career planning, ending with a graduation set at Markshow.

Kids aged 6–14. The Kids DJ Course is taught one-on-one on a controller: 11 lessons of 60–90 minutes with a teacher.

A group class may suit you better if you enjoy learning with others, need classmates to keep you motivated, or want to save on a longer course.

What's included

Private students get everything group students do: lessons with a teacher on club gear; studio practice (8 hours on Level 1, 33 sessions with a teaching assistant on the Comprehensive course) booked through the student portal, 9:00–21:00 daily; lesson slides in English and Vietnamese; a test at the end of each stage and a certificate you can verify by QR code; and a graduation set at Markshow in front of an audience and judges. Need more booth time? Anyone can book a practice room from 250,000 VND (about $10) an hour.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if you use it well. There's no waiting for your turn, mistakes get fixed before they become habits, and the lessons zero in on your weak spots. For many people it's the fastest route from "I can mix" to "I mix well". But private lessons don't replace practice. Set a clear goal from day one, bring your own music, use every practice hour, and record yourself so you can bring the rough spots to your next lesson.
