Rekordbox for beginners: from install to a USB that plays on CDJs

Got your first session on a CDJ-3000 or an XDJ-RX3 coming up and nothing but a USB stick? This rekordbox guide is for you. In short: install the free version of rekordbox, analyse your tracks so they have a BPM and a beat grid, set a few cue points, then export a playlist to a USB stick formatted as FAT32. Do those four things and the stick plays the moment you plug it in — it is the routine our teachers at Muse Inc walk students through before their first practice hour. Updated 2026.

The short version

  • Export mode (preparing a USB) is part of rekordbox's Free plan.
  • After analysing, check the beat grid on the first beat of each track.
  • Format the USB as FAT32 and export playlists from rekordbox — never copy files by hand.
  • CDJ not reading the USB? Check the drive format first.

What rekordbox is and what is free

rekordbox is the music management and DJ software from AlphaTheta, the company behind the Pioneer DJ brand. It analyses and organises your library so you can take it to CDJs and XDJs on a USB stick, and it plays music from your laptop when you DJ on a controller.

According to rekordbox's support pages, version 7 has a Free plan and paid plans (Core, Creative and Professional). The Free plan includes Export mode and selected Performance mode features — enough to prepare a USB for the club's players.

There is also Hardware Unlock: connect your laptop to a supported unit and Performance mode unlocks without a subscription. Pioneer DJ lists the XDJ-RX3 as a Hardware Unlock device, and AlphaTheta says the same of the XDJ-AZ. The full list is on rekordbox's Hardware Unlock page.

Download rekordbox only from rekordbox.com. Copies passed around online are out of date and can carry malware — not worth risking a library full of cues.

Installing, and the two modes

Download the Windows or macOS installer from rekordbox.com, install it and open it. The mode switch sits in the top-left corner.

Export: preparing music for CDJs and XDJs

The mode for getting ready for a practice hour or a gig: import, analyse, set cues, build playlists and export to USB. No hardware needs to be connected, and the laptop stays at home.

Performance: playing with a controller

The laptop is the brain and the controller is the hands: music plays from the computer and you mix on the controller. Our Level 1 — Basic DJ course is taught on a DJ controller with rekordbox, so students use both modes.

Right after installing, open Preferences → Analysis and set three things:

  • BPM range to match the genres you play, so tempos are not read at half or double speed.
  • Track Analysis Mode: Normal for electronic music with a steady tempo; Dynamic for tracks whose tempo drifts, such as live band recordings.
  • Key analysis: switch it on now; you will want it for harmonic mixing.

Analysing tracks: BPM, key and beat grid

Drag your music folder into the Collection, select the tracks and run Analyze. rekordbox measures the BPM, detects the key and builds a beat grid — the markers on the waveform that show where every beat falls.

The beat grid matters most at this stage. If it is off, Sync, loops and beat jumps are off too, and you end up blaming your hands for a problem in the file. To check it:

  1. Zoom into the waveform at the start: the first beat marker should sit exactly on the first kick.
  2. Jump to the middle and the end: markers still on the kicks means you are fine.
  3. If they drift, use the grid edit tools to move the first beat or correct the BPM.

Two classic beginner problems: a 174 BPM drum & bass track read as 87 (correct the BPM, or narrow the range and analyse again), and audio ripped from social media that sounds fine on earbuds but falls apart on a club system — more in lossless vs lossy.

The key column tells you each track's musical key. Mixing tracks in the same or a related key sounds smoother — that is harmonic mixing, which has its own lesson in Level 1 along with the Camelot system.

Hot cues and memory cues

  • Memory cue: a marker on the waveform that tells you what is coming. On a CDJ you step through them with the Call buttons.
  • Hot cue: a point assigned to a pad; press it and the track plays from there instantly.

Both travel with the track when you export. A simple system for beginners: memory cues on the first beat and where you plan to mix out (often 16 or 32 bars before the end); hot cue A at the start, B at the build-up, C at the drop, D at the breakdown. Use the same system on every track and colour-code it (red for drops, say), and in the booth your hands will know which pad is the drop.

Exporting to USB: format and playlists

Pick the right format

Per AlphaTheta's support pages and the XDJ-RR manual:

  • FAT32: read by both the CDJ-3000 and the XDJ-RR. Safe in any booth; the 4 GB per-file limit is no issue for music.
  • exFAT: the CDJ-3000 reads it, the XDJ-RR does not. Use it only if you will play newer players only.
  • HFS+ (Mac OS Extended): both read it, but Windows cannot write it without extra software.
  • NTFS: neither reads it — and many external hard drives sold for Windows come formatted this way.

Our advice: keep one stick just for DJ music and format it FAT32. Our practice rooms have XDJs, CDJ-2000NXS2s and CDJ-3000s, and with FAT32 you never wonder which one will read it. On Windows: right-click the drive → Format → FAT32 (that dialog offers FAT32 only for drives up to 32 GB). On macOS: Disk Utility → Erase → MS-DOS (FAT), scheme Master Boot Record. Formatting wipes the drive, so copy off anything you need first.

Export a playlist

  1. Plug in the stick; it appears under Devices on the left of the rekordbox window.
  2. Build a playlist per practice session or per set, for example "Practice 28 Oct".
  3. Drag the playlist onto the USB: rekordbox copies the music with its BPM, grid and cues into its own folder on the stick.
  4. Eject before you pull the stick out.

Do not drag music onto the stick in File Explorer or Finder: the player may see the files, but not the grids, cues or playlists. And always carry a backup stick — see 7 things every DJ should keep on their USB.

When the CDJ will not read your USB

  • The player does not see the stick: NTFS, or exFAT on an older player. Reformat as FAT32 and export again.
  • The stick shows up, the playlists do not: the music was copied by hand. Export the playlists from rekordbox.
  • Tracks without grids or cues: exported before analysis finished, or cues edited afterwards. Analyse, then export again.
  • A track will not play: a damaged file or a format the player does not support. Convert to high-bitrate MP3 or WAV.
  • A hard drive comes and goes: it needs more power than the port gives (the XDJ-RR's ports supply 5 V / 1 A max). Use a flash drive or a drive with its own power.

Where to practise without owning CDJs

There is no need to buy CDJs to learn on them. The Muse Inc practice rooms are at 409 Hai Ba Trung St., Xuan Hoa Ward (old District 3), Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) — rear entrance — open 9:00–21:00 every day. Hourly rates on the practice room page on 27 October 2026:

  • XDJ-RX3 or XDJ-XZ room: 250,000 VND per hour for 1–2 people.
  • CDJ-2000NXS2 + DJM-900NXS2 room: 350,000 VND per hour.
  • CDJ-3000 + DJM-A9 room: 450,000 VND per hour, up to 4 people.

Bring your own headphones (6.3 mm or 3.5 mm jack) and a USB exported from rekordbox. Our tip: spend a few hours on the XDJ-RX3 — two channels laid out like a CDJ pair and a DJM mixer — then move up to the CDJ-3000 room. Book a practice hour here.

Want a teacher next to you? Level 1 — Basic DJ is 8 lessons of 60 minutes plus 8 hours of practice and a final test, on the school's controllers, in English or Vietnamese; prices are on our course price list. Frequently asked questions

Yes. rekordbox 7 has a Free plan that includes Export mode and selected Performance mode features, so preparing a USB for CDJs or XDJs costs nothing. Connect your laptop to a Hardware Unlock unit such as the XDJ-RX3 or XDJ-AZ and Performance mode unlocks without a subscription too.

Controllers that support rekordbox — check the Hardware Unlock list on rekordbox.com before buying, because some controllers are built for other software. If you take Level 1 at Muse Inc, lessons use the school's controllers, so you can put off buying until you know what you like.

Usually it is the drive format: NTFS is not supported, and exFAT only works on newer players such as the CDJ-3000. Reformat the stick as FAT32 and export your playlists again from rekordbox. If the player sees the stick but no playlists, the music was copied by hand instead of exported.

Not if you only prepare USBs for CDJs and XDJs or play on Hardware Unlock gear. A paid plan matters when you want rekordbox to run with equipment outside that list or need features the Free plan leaves out. Compare the plans on rekordbox.com before you decide.

USB ready? Bring it to the CDJ-3000 room — book a practice hour. Never touched decks before? Book a free trial lesson.

Playing an event without your own decks? You can rent CDJ-3000s or an all-in-one by the day at Muse Inc and bring the USB you prepared in rekordbox.
