The Sync button: a cheat's disguise or a breakthrough for DJing?

For a very long time, whether or not to use the Sync button has been a hot topic of debate among DJs around the world, with plenty of different opinions. And lately the debate is hotter than ever, with even DJ Craze — three-time winner of the DMC World DJ Championships — sharing his view on the Sync feature.

The prejudice against the Sync button comes from what it actually does. Many people argue that by syncing two tracks (both the beat grid and the tempo), the Sync button completely removes the need for beatmatching — a DJ's most fundamental skill. Relying on Sync too much makes DJs forget this basic skill and leaves them completely lost when they hit a track with a faulty tempo or beat grid.

On top of that, some say a DJ carefully beatmatching with headphones and the pitch fader looks far cooler and more impressive than one who simply presses a Sync button.

BUT it's no accident that DJ equipment makers have kept the Sync button on their products all these years. Sync lets DJs focus more on melody and energy rather than rhythm. When they don't have to worry so much about beatmatching, DJs have more time to plan the next tracks for an explosive moment, or simply to add effects and make the set more lively.

And that's not all: the Sync button also helps DJs get more creative with their transitions. Could you pull off a transition like the one in the clip below without Sync?

When will the never-ending debate over the Sync button finally end? Will you use Sync to hide weak beatmatching, or make the most of it to bring more creativity to your sets?
