Almost everyone faces a few obstacles before they start learning to DJ. So what are they, and how can you get past them? In this post, Muse Inc lists some of the biggest barriers, along with our advice for you!

1. Money worries

Investing in DJ equipment and a DJ course can be quite expensive, so financial pressure is always something that holds many people back from DJing.

Muse Inc's advice: if you are thinking about learning to DJ, it is important to weigh up the costs involved. Remember that DJ equipment can be expensive, and so can courses. If you are worried about the cost, there are a few ways to ease the financial burden:

  • Start with basic equipment: there are affordable DJ setups available on the market. You can also rent DJ equipment from a local audio shop.
  • Take an online or beginner DJ course: online and beginner courses tend to be more affordable and better suited to newcomers.
  • You can also learn to DJ from the free resources available online: plenty of websites and videos show you how to get started.

2. Fear and lack of confidence

Doubting your ability to learn new skills, or believing you have no talent for music, is another thing that makes many people hesitate.

Muse Inc's advice: remember that every DJ starts with the smallest lessons, because nobody is born knowing how to DJ. Be ready to put in the time and effort to learn and practise.

Here are some tips to help you build confidence while learning to DJ:

  • Find a mentor or teacher who can support and guide you.
  • Join DJ communities.
  • Experiment with different techniques and styles.
  • Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes when learning a new skill.

3. Parents who say no

Many parents today still have a lot of preconceptions about DJing. All-night parties, alcohol and drugs are what many parents think of when they hear the word DJ. So convincing them to let their kids learn to DJ can be very difficult.

Muse Inc's advice: if your parents are against it, it is important to have an open conversation with them. Try to explain why you are interested in DJing and address any concerns they may have. If you can win them over, they may become your biggest supporters on your journey to becoming a DJ.

Here are some tips to help the conversation go well:

  • Pick the right time and place to talk. Make sure both you and your parents have the time and are in a relaxed frame of mind.
  • Start by talking about why you are interested in DJing. Explain what you love about music and why you think DJing is a great way to express yourself.
  • Listen to your parents' concerns. Try to understand why they are worried and be patient with them – they only want the best for you.
  • Suggest solutions. Let your parents know you are willing to address their concerns, and show them that DJing is not at all as bad as they think.

That's Muse Inc's advice for anyone who loves DJing but has given up because of these obstacles. If you'd like to talk it through or get more advice, don't hesitate to contact Muse Inc. We're always here to support you on the road to following your passion!
