Producer Tips: Remake vs Remix vs Reboot vs Flip vs VIP Mix vs Bootleg

In music, there are several terms that all refer to reworking an original track into a new one: remix, remake, reboot… They're very easy to confuse, so MUSE INC. has put together this post to help you tell them apart.
1. Remix
A remix is an alternative version of a recorded song, created from the original.
Remixers usually work in the studio to create a new recording of the song: they add or remove elements, or simply change the balance, dynamics, pitch, tempo or timing of the track – or almost any aspect of its musical components. Some remixes involve major changes that rework the whole recording, while others are much subtler, such as a “vocal up” version of an album track that brings out the lead singer's voice.
2. Remake
A remake is a piece of music that producers rebuild from scratch, based on an earlier original.
3. Reboot
This term is used when producers or DJs want to recreate someone else's idea based on music that has already been made and released.
When DJs or producers hear a great mashup or track they'd like to download but can't find it, instead of waiting for it to become available, they recreate the idea themselves.
4. Flips
Similar to a bootleg, but a flip adds more harmony or chops up samples from the original track to build the drop.
5. VIP Mix
When a track has already been released and, some time later, its own creators want to take it in a new direction or a new genre, they call the new version a VIP mix.
6. Bootleg
An unofficial remix that record labels don't release officially because it doesn't have copyright permission from the original artist – put simply, it's non-commercial.
