How to Choose the Right DJ Name

Before you think about playing shows, DJing in bars and clubs or, further down the line, building your own image and brand, you need to choose a stage name. It sounds simple, but it makes many DJs think long and hard, because it is the name that will stay with you for almost your entire career as a DJ and producer.
The simplest option is to use your real name. If your birth name is catchy and genuinely easy to remember, don't hesitate to use it. Plenty of artists in Vietnam and around the world have gone this way: DJ Minh Tri, Hoang Anh, Armin van Buuren… However, if DJing isn't your full-time job, think carefully before using your real name, as it could affect your other work.
And if your birth name isn't very memorable, try reworking it the way Martin Garrix (Martijn Garritsen), Tiesto (Tijs Verwest) and Nicky Romero (Nick Rotteveel van Gotum) did. Your stage name can also come from a nickname people have given you.
Whether you use your real name or a nickname, there are two especially important things to keep in mind. First, it must be easy to say, easy to spell and easy to remember. You definitely don't want people mispronouncing or misspelling your name, do you? Second, make sure the name you plan to use isn't already taken by another artist, so you can stand out among the countless DJs and producers out there today.
A stage name is a hugely important part of building an artist's brand. A unique, memorable name will make your career path that much smoother.
